A new morning habit: drink salted lemon water for optimum hydration

Table of Contents

I do drink water consciously and regularly. However, sometimes after frequent short-distance and long-distance travels, I still find myself exhausted with sluggish muscle and a mild headache. Since recently I have just bought a small box of salted lemon, I intuitively think of making some salted lemon water and drink. The relief it brings is undeniably huge and fast. It makes me wonder about the benefits of drinking salted lemon water to the body, regarding hydration and more. It's not about nutrition as I eat very healthily, now it's about body's electrolyte balance.

A loss of electrolytes can create an imbalance that brings on symptoms such as:

  • Confusion or brain fog.
  • Irritability.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Fatigue.
  • Headaches or dizziness.
  • Diarrhea.

Salted lemon water provides electrolytes for the body because the salt (sodium chloride) contains sodium, a key electrolyte, while the lemon adds a small amount of potassium, another important electrolyte, which together help maintain proper fluid balance and support muscle and nerve function; however, a single lemon doesn't provide a significant amount of electrolytes on its own, so it's best to consider it as a mild way to boost hydration, particularly when combined with a pinch of salt. So full cup of salted lemon water can help you to recover significantly when you feel sick and not want to get up.

Though water is essential for the body, it is not enough.

Why are Electrolytes Important for Our Body?

However, water by itself does not create optimal hydration. Your body needs electrolytes as well in order to perform many of the functions where water is used. An electrolyte is a substance which conducts electricity when dissolved in water. Common electrolytes include potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca 2+), magnesium (Mg 2+), and chloride (Cl-).

All life requires maintaining correct electrolyte balances as they affect and regulate hydration, blood pH, and nerve and muscle function. Muscle and neuron tissue are considered electric tissue because they rely on the movement of electrolytes entering and leaving their cells in order to activate. For example, muscle contractions are dependent on calcium (Ca 2+), sodium (Na +), magnesium (Mg 2+) and potassium (K+). Imbalances in these three electrolytes could cause muscle weakness or cramping (1).

The Benefits of Lemon and Salt Water

The addition of some fresh lemon juice along with a dash of sea salt into some warm water creates a healthy and convenient drink that is filled with electrolytes and provides some amazing natural benefits of lemon as well.

Sea salt is sodium chloride, which dissociates in water to provide the body with sodium and chloride ions (electrolytes). The addition of lemon provides some potassium, calcium, and magnesium as well.

While not as abundant as sodium, lemons contain a small amount of potassium, another essential electrolyte that supports muscle function and nerve transmission.

Adding lemon and a small amount of salt to water can make it more appealing to drink, encouraging increased fluid intake and optimum hydration.

You need water to live (obviously!). But H2O is just one part of the equation. Your body runs on electrolytes.…

I guess you can drink salted lemon water for a fresh morning start or to detox liver after an alcohol overconsumption or to recover after sudden day-time fatique.
